    Notes
    • On January 17, 1901 Ralph and Isabella Hicks went to their first home . There was a dirt and grass lane to the front door. That was fine f or their horses and wagon. In later years it was known as Aunt Ruth (H icks) Kemp farm, part of Ralph's and Isabella's original farm. At hi s death Grandpa Ralph bequeathed 40 acres to each one of his children.

There were three barns. They were collectively called "Prairie View F arm". The right side of the house on the ground level was the kitche n area; and the left side was the Parlor. Upstairs were their sleepin g quarters. At this house Russel bachelored for two years (1927-1929 ) after graduating from college.

On September 22, 1908, Catherine (age 6) and Russel (age 5) went to Br own Jug Schoolhouse for their first year. It was a one-room school, w ith all grades, first through high school, together, and one teacher f or all students. Prior to 1918 most grade schools focused on the firs t eight grades. Russel and Catherine went all of their school years t ogether, from 1908 until 1921 when they graduated from high school i n Hamilton. They boarded in Hamilton for their junior and senior year s. She was a cook/homemaker. He got the firewood and was her protect or. Catherine said that she and Russel traveled by train from Hamilto n to Nettleton and back again. Papa Ralph would meet them at Nettleto n Station on Fridays and return them on Sundays.

The second home of Ralph and Isabella was purchased in 1916, the yea r Anna Grace Was born. It was purchased from Thomas Goodrich as par t of an estate sale. Later, Russel and Mary Ann (Davis) Hicks and the ir children lived in it. In 1953, it became the property of Ralph W . Hicks, after the death of his dad, Russell. He still owns the far m in the late 1990's.

High school graduates usually had to stay home to help on the farm fo r one year before continuing their education.

A third farm was purchased in the 1930's. By 1933 some additions wer e made -- a front porch and a summerhouse in the back. In her later y ears, Bella lived in the summerhouse. Grandma had a love for readin g and clipping articles. In her three rooms she had those articles sh e loved.
